Vichy top : the perfect top for summer

For this sewing project, I was inspired by the « cottage core » aesthetic, which I often see on social media and Pinterest. The first version of this top was a gift for a friend, and its simplicity, combined with an effective design, made me want to recreate it in multiple colors. It turned out to be the perfect piece for summer : cute, comfortable, and easy to wear. 

Design process : simplicity meets versatility

I aimed to create a model that was both simple to make and easy to explain. I designed my own pattern and chose cotton—an easy-to-handle fabric that provides a perfect finish for this design. The Vichy Top is light, breathable, and perfect for warm weather. I also chose the timeless gingham pattern, which adds to the classic charm of the piece.

Gathers as a defining technique

The main technique used in this project is the creation of gathers, which I did entirely with elastic thread on my sewing machine. Depending on the fit of the model, I create between 10 and 15 lines of gathers. This process is definitely the most time-consuming part of the project, but it’s essential to achieving the flattering texture and drape of the top.

Making sewing accessible : sharing the craft

I wanted to share the joy of sewing, so I posted a 2-minute tutorial on my Instagram to show how accessible this craft can be. Many people are hesitant to start sewing because they feel overwhelmed, but I believe that by breaking the process down into simple steps and seeking help when needed, anyone can be impressed by what they’re capable of creating.

Creating for others : a journey of connection

This project isn’t just about the design; it’s about the meaning behind the making. Sewing is often a solitary activity, but through sharing, we reconnect with others and remember what truly matters. I find joy in creating pieces for my loved ones, and it motivates me to push myself and improve my skills. This sense of connection inspired me to create Byclax : a space where I can share my passion and build a community around it.

Final thoughts : a piece that embodies my style

This top perfectly represents my personal style. It’s a piece I’ve made for some of my friends in various colors, and it has now become a part of our group’s identity. Each version of this top carries a little piece of me, and it brings us all together, highlighting the connections we share through creativity and thoughtful design.

I’ve also received numerous messages on Instagram from random people who have recreated this top themselves, which makes me incredibly proud. This is what truly gives meaning to my passion : knowing that my creations inspire others and are being shared in their own unique ways.
