Gala dress : a chic black gown

For the 2023 Mines Gala, I created an elegant black ensemble with refined details that make all the difference. From the satin bias tape that adds a subtle touch of brilliance to the golden eyelets and buttons on the back, every element was chosen to enhance the sophistication of the outfit. But what truly sets this ensemble apart is the original design of the top, with its striking high-neck collar and keyhole detail, which instantly draws attention and elevates the entire look.

Design inspiration and process

The idea for this piece came from a video featuring Kiana Bono. I instantly fell in love with the high-neck collar and keyhole detail on the chest—it was the perfect balance of elegance and allure. While I was able to follow and adapt patterns for the skirt and bustier, the unique collar posed a new challenge. With no similar pattern available, I had to learn how to draft my own. This process involved draping fabric directly on a mannequin and going through several iterations before achieving a result I was proud of.

Techniques and craftsmanship

This ensemble marked my first experience in creating my own patterns, which was both the most challenging and rewarding aspect of the project. While I could adapt existing patterns for the skirt and bustier, drafting the high-neck collar from scratch was entirely new territory. I learned to use the draping technique on a mannequin, experimenting with fabric placement and structure until I achieved the elegant, refined look I had envisioned. Adding boning to the corset was another first, requiring careful planning to ensure the right fit and support. 

A sustainable approach : two pieces for more versatility

I always strive to create garments that I’m certain I’ll wear, and this ensemble was no exception. By making it as two separate pieces, I ensured its versatility and extended its lifespan beyond the gala. The bustier, in particular, has become a wardrobe favorite, and I’ve had many occasions to wear it again, often pairing it with classic black trousers for an effortlessly chic look. This approach not only reflects my commitment to sustainability but also highlights my focus on creating functional designs that fit seamlessly into my everyday style.

Final thoughts : a rewarding challenge

This project marked a turning point in my sewing journey. It pushed me to learn new skills, from drafting patterns to mastering intricate details. The golden buttons, the satin accents, and the structured collar all contribute to making this ensemble a personal favorite.
